Groesbeck ISD Superintendent Anthony Figueroa Shares Commitment To Reducing Listening Barriers

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Anthony Figueroa, the superintendent for Groesbeck ISD, here again with some exciting news of what’s going on with GISD. Last week, I had a chance to feature our new well air purification systems with NanoStrike technology. Today, I want to feature our new audio systems. Learning begins with listening. At GISD, we’re committed to reducing listening barriers in the classroom. We bought 24 audio Lightspeed Redcat systems for our pre-k through third grade classrooms.

Did you know that about 30% of our K-6 population have ear infections with fluid buildup at different times, producing mild hearing loss? Without interventions, about two-thirds of those kids are going to have a deficiency in at least one subject by sixth grade. Another major issue is voice distance. In a typical vocal classroom, ambient noise hits about 60 decibels. A teacher’s volume is only at 70 decibels. So there’s a lot of soft consonants that kids are not hearing properly, like a P, H, T, K, S, TH, C, SCs, and SH sounds. They’re just quieter, and it makes it harder for younger learners, ELLs, and those kids that have the hearing loss.

Groesbeck ISD is making every effort to ensure that kids can really hear so that they can really learn. We’re excited about our partnership with Account Executive LaFaith Washington at Lightspeed. So join me next week as we feature about our new vestibules and our new door entries that we added this summer. Have a great day.
